As some of you may know, I’ve been a professional photographer for many years, with credits in National Geographic Society publications and many others. Color is obviously a mainstay in photography and the way we choose to portray it, whether in a golden sunset or on a cold, hazy winter day, has significant bearing on the emotional draw of the image.
It’s exactly the same in writing. Colors add dimensionality to your narrative. They bring an emotional component to it for readers. They enliven your characters. So, in today’s Friday Creative I’d like you to focus on one color - red.
Red is a fascinating color. Many experts associate it with anger, others with calmness. But whatever you personally feel about the color, it can serve you well in your writing.
Consider a flamboyant character as she makes an entrance to a ball where she must accomplish something critical to the story. Will she wear a simple, yet elegant dark blue dress, or a more dashing dress with a sweeping red scarf draped across it.
In today’s attempt to exercise your writing creativity, limit yourself to 100 words where red plays an important role. Please share your passage with us to feast on. Could be straight narrative, a dash of dialogue, or a poem. But, whatever you choose, be good to yourself and exercise… your writer’s mind, that is.
